Mammal Status

BLACK RAT Rattus rattus
STATUS: Long extinct

Introduced during the Roman era, but became extinct by the end of the around the end of the 18th century and have been replaced by Brown Rats. Pilkington (1789) already said that there were ‘very few’ in the county, only 60 years or so since brown rats first arrived in Great Britain.
