NOCTULE BAT Nyctalus noctula
STATUS: Widespread

The largest species of bat in the county. Widely distributed and found at least as far north as the Wye Valley below Buxton, though with a few records from farther NW. Roosts mainly in tree holes, so tends to be associated with areas of mature woodland and shows a preference for feeding over river valleys and lakes. It is possibly declining as roost sites in older trees are lost or subject to ‘tidying up’. Sometimes uses bat boxes.
